Spring ensures many thrills for the nature lover in our part of Ontario on the north eastern tip of the Niagara Escarpment but spotting this fabulous Red Headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) is always a Spring highlight. A loud shrill call announces his presence before he is observed and one must be very cautious as he is a timid visitor. Far less common than they used to be, Red Headed Woodpeckers are in the decline in Ontario due to loss of nesting habitat and climate change.
